“No Other God's”

G. Penton

Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

(Exodus 20:3 KJVR)

Introduction

Things about Idols

An idol can be anything that causes you to sacrifice of your self, your time, and your money.

1 Corinthians 10:19-23 KJVR (19) What say I then? that the idol is any thing, or that which is offered in sacrifice to idols is any thing? (20) But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils.

An idol can be anything that causes us to serve it rather than God

    (21) Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils. (22) Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than he? (23) All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.

An idol can be something that masters us.

Psalms 119:133 KJVR Order my steps in thy word: and let not any iniquity have dominion over me.

An idol can be anything we trust in.

Luke 12:27-34 KJVR (27) Consider the lilies how they grow: they toil not, they spin not; and yet I say unto you, that Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. (28) If then God so clothe the grass, which is to day in the field, and to morrow is cast into the oven; how much more will he clothe you, O ye of little faith? (29) And seek not ye what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink, neither be ye of doubtful mind. (30) For all these things do the nations of the world seek after: and your Father knoweth that ye have need of these things. (31) But rather seek ye the kingdom of God; and all these things shall be added unto you. (32) Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom. (33) Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth. (34) For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

An idol is something that is inflated to function as a substitute for God. It may well come in the form of an overattachment to something that is, in itself, perfectly good...a physical object, a property, a person, an activity, a role, an institution, a hope, an image, an idea, a pleasure, a hero-anything can subsitute for God.

I did some research this week on Facebook. I asked for some comments and I got some pretty good ones. I asked people to comment on my post and tell me some things that had become God to them or to others whom they had witnessed. I was able to condense those down into three basic catagories and those are what I want to talk to you about tonight.

Message

  1. The god of self

The indication of whether one is serving the god of self or the ONE TRUE God is whether we pass the test of Matthew 6:21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

    1. Pride

      1. 1 Corinthians 10:12 KJVR Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.

      1. Proverbs 16:18 KJVR Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.

    1. Religion

      1. Religion without relationship is worth nothing.

      2. Isaiah 64:6 KJVR But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.

      3. Going to church doesn't make you a child of God anymore than sitting in a garage makes you a car.

      4. Matthew 6:1-18

    2. Lust

      1. Ephesians 4:18-20

  1. The god of achievement

    1. Materialism – Matthew 6:19-20

    2. Status – Matthew 6:19-20

    3. Education – 2 Timothy 3:1-7

    4. Career – Matthew 6:19-20

    5. Perfect Children

    6. No Man Can Serve two masters, Matthew 6:21-24

    7. The danger of leaving God out of your plans – Luke 12:16-21 The rich man and the large harvest...

  1. The god of pleasure or entertainment

Proverbs 21:16-17 The man that wandereth out of the way of understanding shall remain in the congregation of the dead. (17) He that loveth pleasure shall be a poor man: he that loveth wine and oil shall not be rich.

    1. Hobbies

    2. Activities

Always seeking satisfaction outside of God

    Conclusion

Seek The One and TRUE GOD

Seek you FIRST the Kingdom of GOD
